Virgin Australia Velocity has just published a new promotion offering double Velocity Points on all eligible Virgin Australia domestic flights for travel until 17 August 2021.
The caveat: Flights applicable for this campaign have to be booked before 29 September 2020 basically giving Virgin Australia (a company that still owes people millions in refunds) a cash advance for up to a year.
This promotion just arrived in my email inbox and considering the uncertain future of air travel over the next twelve months, let alone that of Virgin Australia I’m in the very least skeptical about this.
You can access this promotion on Virgin Velocity website (see here).
Earn double Velocity Points on all eligible Virgin Australia domestic flights when you book before 29 September 2020 and travel by 17 August 2021. That’s 10 Points for every $1 you spend on your domestic flights.
You simply register and then the account is set up to earn these extra miles.
Virgin Australia has just been sold to U.S. equity firm Bain Capital in a deal worth 3.5 billion Australian dollars which will see unsecured creditors geting paid between 9 and 13 cents on the dollar for their claims. Virgin’s creditors are currently owed a total of about AU$7 billion.
At the same time thousands of Virgin Australia customers have only received vouchers for their recently cancelled flights before the company went into voluntary administration. It has been made clear that even the acceptance of these vouchers for new flights is up to the goodwill of the new owners and the company has already announced that using these credit would be highly restrictive (no partner flights, even codeshares etc).
Conclusion
Double miles are always a good thing and if you’re currently planning on booking any flights for the upcoming months then sure why not.
I wouldn’t make speculative bookings just for the sake of a few more miles however. Virgin Australia’s conduct through this entire administration process and even since they have a new owner has been pretty much a disgrace, leaving thousands of customers out of pocket. Keep your wallet close and an eye on your money when dealing with airlines for the coming year or so!
