TUI to restart flights to Portugal from August 29 after country is removed from UK quarantine list

TUI is restarting flights and holidays to Portugal this month, after the country was removed from the UK’s quarantine list.

From August 29, Brits can head back to the country with TUI after the tour operator was forced to cancel the majority of routes last month.

Portugal was left off the UK’s air bridge back in July, after a spike in cases in Lisbon caused concern.

However, with just 55,597 overall cases, compared to its neighbour Spain’s 407,879, the country has been put back on the menu for holidays since last week.

Countries with less than 20 new cases per 100,000 population, over a period of seven days, can avoid being placed on the UK’s quarantine list.

Travel expert Paul Charles, CEO of PC Agency, puts Portugal’s current number at 14.1 using data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) – below the 20 mark.

A TUI spokesperson told Sun Online Travel: “We’re really pleased the Government has confirmed British travellers will be able to holiday to Portugal without the need to quarantine on their return to the UK.

“In line with the latest advice, we will be resuming flights to Portugal from 29 August. We look forward to welcoming our customers back very soon.”

However, while Brits won’t have to quarantine when back in the UK, there are some entry restrictions for parts of Portugal.

If heading to Madeira, you will need to fill in a questionnaire 48 hours before travel, along with a negative coronavirus test 72 hours before travel – you will also face a health screening on arrival.

If heading to the Azores, you will need a negative coronavirus test taken 72 hours before travelling, and anyone staying longer than seven days will need to take a second test.

Mainland Portugal has no entry restrictions apart from a health screening on arrival.
