Marriott Bonvoy UK SPG American Express Conversion

Marriott Bonvoy and American Express have been sending out messages to their affiliated credit cardholders in the UK informing them  about product changes taking place next month.

The Starwood Preferred Guest American Express card is switching to Marriott Bonvoy branding with some changes instituted at the same time.

You can access Marriott Bonvoy here.

Here are the benefit changes:

The new card allows members to earn 15 elite qualifying nights yearly while the number of points earned at non-Marriott properties is cut from 3 to 2 per GPB.

You do get a free night capped at 25,000 points yearly if spending a minimum of 25,000 GBP.

Conclusion

I would not swipe this card at any non-Marriott merchant outside of the UK due to hefty 2.99% currency conversion fee that Amex doesn’t have on its largest market (US).

The card can make sense for readers who need the 15 nights yearly towards Platinum or Titanium status. The Silver that it comes with or Gold that can be reached after spending 15,000 GBP are not worthwhile levels due to lack of benefits.

The free night that is capped at just 25,000 points per night is difficult to use due to constant program devaluation and requires rather high spend regardless.
