Dubai Launches Remote Worker Visa

There have been talks in several countries trying to attract remote workers that previous visa options cannot capture.

Dubai, the UAE’s commercial hub, has this week launched a one-year-long virtual worker program to attract qualified remote working professionals looking to relocate.

You can Dubai Tourism’s page for the program here.

The purpose of this new visa is not to attract professionals that seek employment opportunities in Dubai, but those that continue to work for their current employer or own business.

How does it work?

  • Your virtual working programme is valid 1 year.
  • It costs US$287 plus medical insurance with valid UAE coverage and processing fee per person.
  • You get access to all required services, including telecoms, utilities, and schooling options.
  • You connect to a global hub and a skilled workforce, composed of 200+ nationalities.

  • Passport with minimum 6 months validity
  • Health insurance with UAE coverage validity
  • Proof of Employment from current employer with a one-year contract validity, a minimum of US$5,000 per month salary, last month’s payslip and 3 preceding months’ bank statements
  • If the applicant is a company owner: proof of ownership of company for one year or more, with an average monthly income of US$5,000 per month, and 3 preceding months’ bank statements

You have to give Dubai credit that they managed to launch this while many other countries are merely “talking” about this remote worker visa-option.

Dubai could be an attractive option for some professionals, as there is no personal income tax. You do then need to pay for all the services, however.

I am not sure how much this undisclosed processing fee is, and I would imagine that the health insurance is not exactly cheap, considering that you do need it for a year (most travel insurance options are valid for a trip of 30 to 60 days).
