Hyatt is targeting holders of its legacy credit card with a great spending offer, giving a category 1-4 free night certificate after spending $4,000 on the card by the end of the year.

Quick Thoughts
This is a surprisingly generous offer from Hyatt. Getting a free night certificate after only spending $4,000 on an existing credit card (rather than as part of a signup bonus) is excellent. If you were to redeem the certificate at a category 4 property which usually costs 15,000 points per night, that’s like earning 3.75 bonus points per dollar. You’ll already earn at least 1x per dollar, so you’ll get at least 4,000 points from the spend as well.
Even more surprising is the fact that this is being targeted at legacy credit cardholders. My wife has the old Hyatt credit card and was able to register for this offer, whereas I received a message advising I wasn’t eligible for this promotion when trying to register my World of Hyatt card.
It’s surprising that legacy cards have been targeted because you’d usually expect Hyatt and/or Chase to offer an incentive to upgrade the card rather than encouraging you to put spend on that card and keep it open through the new year in order to be eligible for the certificate seeing as the account has to be open for fulfillment of the offer.
We’d been planning on closing my wife’s Hyatt card at some point and applying for the World of Hyatt card seeing as she’s below 5/24 and I wanted to take advantage of the fact that she could earn a category 1-4 night after spending $15,000 on the card in addition to the signup bonus. We’ll therefore hold off on doing that for now seeing as we can get the free night for only $4,000 of spend instead, even though it means missing out on the signup bonus for now.
