LATAM (was formed when Chilean LAN and Brazilian TAM merged) exited Oneworld Alliance on an expedited schedule on May 1, 2020 (read more here) due to Delta buying a stake in 2019 (read more here).
LATAM’s goal was to continue frequent flier partnership (earning and burning miles + elite benefits) with all other Oneworld members than AA (Delta’s competitor) after leaving the alliance. I was already questioning back then if this would even be possible?
You can access BA’s page for partner airlines here.
British Airways has ended Tier Points (elite qualifying miles effectively) earnings on all LATAM flights effective May 1, 2020, although this change was not pushed to their website until Friday (May 22).
There doesn’t appear to be a change in the number of Avios earned.
Conclusion
This was precisely what I was afraid of when LATAM announced its withdrawal from the alliance while intending to keep the frequent flier partnerships in place with the majority of airlines.
What is a bit of a surprise here, however, is that Qatar Airways partly own both LATAM and BA. You would think that BA would have been the last one to end earning Tier Points.
I will likely credit LATAM flights in the future for Alaska’s Mileage Plan that will become an Oneworld program at some point in 2021. I am in the process of becoming a lifetime BA Gold (Oneworld Emerald) and missing 7K to 8K TPs at this point.
